- In 2023 John Gourlay, a member of the orchestra, was commissioned by Kirkcaldy Old Kirk Trust and Fife Council to write a piece to commemorate the birth of the philosopher Adam Smith. Adam Smith was baptised in June 1723 in the Old Kirk which is now the home of Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society. The first performance of The Baptism of Adam Smith was in October 2023 and it was then nominated for an award by Making Music, the umbrella organisation for leisure-time music groups, and was the joint winner in the category Best Music Creator for a Leisure-time Music Group 2024.
